Casa Colibrí means Hummingbird House in Spanish.

The name was chosen because of what it represents to the Maya. According to a Guatemalan legend called The Hummingbird King, there was a boy prince who was heir to his father’s throne. Throughout his young life, a hummingbird looks out for his welfare, protects him, and warns him of impending danger. We chose Casa Colibrí because we wanted our name to suggest protection and refuge, a place where people can go for help and know that they will be met with kindness.
How did you get involved with the people in that particular area?
The founders of Casa Colibrí traveled to northwest Guatemala on a Rotary International service trip to determine the medical needs and health status of the indigenous people living in the region. The vision was to build a clinic in an area where there was no medical assistance available.
