Frequently Asked Questions

Volunteering

Is it dangerous to travel to that area?

Our volunteers have made many trips to Nuevo Edén since 2001. There has never been a security incident to date. The area is rural; the people are farmers and woodcutters. It is peaceful, and the Mayan people themselves are warm and welcoming. There is some danger inherent in driving on unpaved mountain roads in bad repair. Traffic is a challenge in the big cities.

I don't speak Spanish. Can I still help?

While Spanish is the official language of Guatemala, the Maya where we work speak their native Q’anjob’al, one of the 23 Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala. Most women and small children do not speak Spanish at all. There are many ways to help, and Spanish is not required. We welcome your inquiry!
