Marcia Basilio
Social Worker
Marcia Basilio is a remarkable person. She is one of the few indigenous Guatemalan women who has earned a university degree. Married for just under a year, her husband was killed in an automobile accident when she was nine months pregnant, so she had to find a way to support herself and her baby. A single mother and Q’anjob’al Maya, Marcia worked at the Centro de Salud as a nurse’s aid while putting herself through college. She achieved her dream and received a degree in Social Work in 2009. Marcia is an organizer without equal and is selflessly committed to her indigenous community. She continues to inspire and motivate all who know her.
